25 years ago in Iran, the CIA and Canadian Government joined forces in a covert operation called "The Hollywood Option". It would be the most dangerous diplomatic operation in Canadian history. The story unfolds in this documentary, Escape from Iran: The Hollywood Option, made by Director Chris Triffo and Emmy®-Award Winning Partners in Motion.

On November 4th, 1979, 66 employees of the American Embassy in Tehran are captured and held hostage. Just a few hundred meters away, six other Americans have escaped and are on the move.

Only a few key people know about the escapees. Ken Taylor, the Canadian Ambassador to Iran, searches desperately for a way to get them out. In Ottawa, Prime Minister Joe Clark and Flora McDonald, Secretary of State for External Affairs, have a big decision to make. Antonio Mendez, an officer with the CIA, knows a secret operation would have to be ingenious to work. The risk is immeasurable.

They choose The Hollywood Option.

The former Empress of Iran, Joe Clark, Flora McDonald, key members of the US Administration and CIA, authors Stephen Kinzer and Claude Adams, former Ambassador Ken Taylor, American hostages, and members of the six escapees all bring this story together in time for the 25th Anniversary of the hostage taking. Escape from Iran: The Hollywood Option was made with support from History TV, Canal D, SCN, CTF License Fee Program, Saskfilm, Saskatchewan Film Employment Tax Credit, Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit, Telefilm Canada, NFB, and Harmony Entertainment.
