On this Day - Granduc Avalanche - Feb 18, 1965
After days of heavy snowfall, at least 60 inches of wet, heavy snow were left to settle on the mountainside above the Granduc mining development. Work on this mine included the creation of an 11-mile long tunnel through the mountain terrain that would give access to much-needed equipment. In the morning of February 18, 1965 a massive avalanche claimed the lives of 26 of their coworkers. This avalanche buried 50 workers and destroyed most of the Granduc campsite.
